Tobacco control: GATS-Cameroon results presented to journalists

The Cameroon Coalition to Counter Tobacco (C3T) held on Wednesday, March, 9th, 2016, a press conference in Yaounde. With objective to improve tobacco control in the press.

Despite the evolution of tobacco control activities in Cameroon, the smoking phenomenon is growing. To remedy the situation, the C3T with the support of the Campaign for Tobacco Free kids(CTFK) convened on Wednesday 9th, 2016, the press for an exchange on tobacco control. Given that Cameroonian press being dense and varied, the Cameroon Coalition to Counter Tobacco (C3T) wanted to meet with new journalists, to enlighten and inform them on tobacco control.

The meeting held in the presence of the Tobacco Control Press Committee (TPC) members. This enabled the Cameroonian journalists to have the results of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-Cameroon
2013).  “The press is an important educational tool which is why we invited historians of today you are to provide you with more elements for the better treatment of the subjects on tobacco” explained by Paul Marcel MAYAGUI, Communication Officer of C3T. For him, the results of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey(GATS) allowed to better perceive the reality of smoking in Cameroon.

During the meeting, the press was also enlightened on the situation of tobacco control in Cameroon, the maneuvers of the tobacco industry, the proposed draft anti-tobacco law… After rich exchanges on the mentioned topics, journalist have promised to continue raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco, advocacy for the adoption of a strong anti-tobacco law and denouncing violations of the tobacco industry.
